When Painting and Sculpture Start a Conversation
At the Museum Altomünster, two independent artistic positions meet: the expressive bronze sculptures of Polish sculptor Remigiusz Dulko and the atmospherically charged paintings of Aichach painter and writer Fabian Oppolzer. The exhibition Painting & Sculpture in Dialogue connects different media, cultural experiences, and historical perspectives to create a concentrated artistic experience.
Bronze between Body, Memory, and Spirituality
Remigiusz Dulko, born in 1955 in Lidzbark Warmiński, studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, graduating with honors in 1979. Since the beginning of his artistic career, he has been working intensively with bronze and accompanies every step of the creation process—from design to model to final finishing.
His figurative sculptures navigate between the sacred and the profane. Human relationships, memory, spirituality, and symbolic condensation shape his artistic vision. The bronze lends weight, warmth, and both resistant and sensual surfaces to the works. In examining the artworks, it becomes visible how the plastic form physically anchors thoughts in space.
Fabian Oppolzer: Painting with Literary Sensibility
Fabian Oppolzer, born in 1984 in Stuttgart, studied history, theology, and comparative literature in Vienna. Since 2012, he has been working as a freelance writer and, since 2017, also as a visual artist. His artistic practice includes realistic portraits as well as imaginative, dream-like image worlds, where the familiar and the foreign merge.
For this exhibition, his paintings engage in a conscious exchange with Dulko's sculptures. Colors, shapes, and atmospheres respond to the plastic presence of bronze. The eye wanders from the painterly surface to the three-dimensional form, from color tones to shadows, and from narrative hints to physical presence.
A Dialogue Across Borders
The curation takes up the partnership between Dachau and Oświęcim. Two artists from different cultural contexts meet in an exhibition that makes art a distinct language of communication. Painting and sculpture do not stand isolated next to each other but open new perspectives on proximity, memory, and cultural connection.
Additionally, a film about the relay run from Dachau to Auschwitz will be shown. The run marked a symbol of remembrance and reconciliation and expands the aesthetic experience with a dimension of cultural education and historical responsibility.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Artistic Experience
The exhibition spaces invite a decelerated examination of the works. Light, material, and spatial effects make the bronze appear in changing nuances, while the painting responds with color, surface, and narrative openness. This interplay makes the exhibition particularly attractive for art enthusiasts: genre, origin, and stylistic boundaries recede, while the immediate encounter with the works takes center stage.
Conclusion: Experience Art as Encounter
Visitors can expect a concentrated exhibition with expressive bronze, poetically charged painting, and a multifaceted cultural-historical context. Painting & Sculpture in Dialogue combines aesthetic experience, art historical context, and cultural education. Those who wish to experience the connecting power of art directly will find an inspiring place for an intensive examination of the works at the Museum Altomünster.
