When Painting and Sculpture Engage in Conversation
The Altomünster Museum presents the exhibition Painting & Sculpture in Dialogue from September 27, 2026, to January 17, 2027, featuring works by Polish sculptor Remigiusz Dulko from Oświęcim/Auschwitz and Aichach painter, writer, and musician Fabian Oppolzer. The exhibition connects two independent artistic positions to create an intense artistic experience about color, form, material, space, and memory.
A Dialogue between Surface, Body, and Space
The title of the exhibition also describes the curatorial principle. Oppolzer's paintings open imaginative image spaces, working with color sounds, narrative motifs, and a poetic shift of the familiar. Dulko counters this flat image world with the physical presence of his bronze sculptures. Volume, surface, light, and interspace become independent means of expression.
In the observation of the works, an aesthetic experience emerges that sharpens the perception of proportion, materiality, and movement. The atmosphere of the exhibition thrives on the interplay between painterly depth and sculptural condensation. Visitors experience how light glides over bronze, how sculptures structure the space, and how color generates emotional resonances.
Remigiusz Dulko: Bronze between Body and Memory
Remigiusz Dulko studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and graduated with honors in 1979. For more than four decades, he has primarily worked with bronze and accompanies the creation process of his works from the initial idea to the final processing. His figurative sculptures revolve around human relationships, sensuality, spirituality, and the tension between the sacred and the mundane.
The bronze achieves a special sensual presence in his works. Weight and movement, resistance and surface enter into a rich relationship of tension. Expressive forms, gestures, and interspaces invite reflection on physicality, closeness, transcendence, and memory.
Fabian Oppolzer: Painting between Reality and Imagination
Fabian Oppolzer studied history, theology, and comparative literature in Vienna. Since 2012, he has worked as a freelance writer, and since 2017 as a visual artist. His painting and graphics combine realistic portraits with imaginative, dream-like worlds. Familiar figures and situations undergo a poetic shift, opening the space for inner images.
Oppolzer's works combine color, structure, narrative, and memory. In interplay with Dulko's sculptures, the painting gains additional spatial tension: color fields and imagery rhythms respond to the physicality of the bronze, while the sculptures gain new nuances of meaning from the painterly environment. For his artistic work, Oppolzer received, among other awards, the audience prize of the Aichacher Art Prize 2022.
Art as a Connection Across Cultural Borders
The German-Polish exhibition possesses a special cultural-historical dimension. Dulko comes from Oświęcim/Auschwitz, the Polish partner district of the Dachau district, while Oppolzer works in the Aichach region. The exhibition continues the connection between both regions in the language of art, making it visible how painting and sculpture can enable encounters.
The Altomünster Museum creates a resonant place for this purpose. The contemporary works relate to the history of the former Bridgettine convent and the Bridgettine order. Cultural education emerges here through immediate seeing, comparing, and conversing in front of the originals. The exhibition is aimed at experienced art lovers as well as curious first-time visitors.
Art Experience at the Altomünster Museum
The exhibition is open Thursdays to Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 PM, Sundays from 1 PM to 5 PM, and on holidays from 1 PM to 4 PM. Admission costs 2.50 euros per person; children up to 14 years visit the exhibition free of charge. Groups of ten or more pay 2 euros per person.
Painting & Sculpture in Dialogue promises a concentrated encounter with two independent artistic languages. Bronze sculptures, painterly image worlds, and the historical atmosphere of the museum combine to create an exhibition that makes color, form, material, and memory directly tangible. Anyone wishing to experience art in its sensory, art-historical, and social depth should definitely visit this exhibition live.
