When Painting and Sculpture Engage in Conversation

At the Altomünster Museum, two artistic positions from Germany and Poland will come together from September 27, 2026, to January 17, 2027. The exhibition Painting & Sculpture in Dialogue unites the Polish sculptor Remigiusz Dulko from Oświęcim, also known as Auschwitz, with the painter and writer Fabian Oppolzer from Aichach.

Art as a Cross-Border Dialogue

The exhibition showcases how different media open up new perspectives. Painting and sculpture engage in immediate exchange: surface and body, color and volume, quiet contemplation and plastic presence encounter one another in the exhibition space. This creates an artistic experience that transcends cultural boundaries and makes the unifying power of art tangible.

Remigiusz Dulko: Expressive Sculptures in Bronze

Remigiusz Dulko, born in 1955 in Lidzbark Warmiński and working in Oświęcim for many years, studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, graduating with distinction in 1979. Since the beginning of his artistic career, he has worked intensively with bronze and accompanies the creation process from the idea through the model to the final finishing.

His figurative sculptures oscillate between the sacred and the profane, human relationships, memory, spirituality, and symbolic condensation. The characteristic material effect of bronze gives the works weight, warmth, and a simultaneously resistant yet sensual surface. It becomes clear upon viewing the works that plastic form not only reflects thoughts but also anchors them physically in space.

Fabian Oppolzer: Painting with Literary Sensitivity

Fabian Oppolzer is rooted in the region as a painter, musician, and writer. His paintings are deliberately coordinated with Dulko's bronze sculptures for the exhibition. This creates not merely a juxtaposition but a curated encounter, in which colors, forms, and atmospheres interact with one another.

The aesthetic experience of the exhibition lies precisely in this interplay: The eye wanders from the painterly surface to the three-dimensional shape, from color tones to shadows, from narrative hints to physical presence. The atmosphere of the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider familiar categories such as national origin, genre, or stylistic boundaries.

Cultural Education and Historical Connection

The exhibition is also marked by the county partnership between Dachau and Oświęcim. Two artists from different cultural backgrounds engage in an artistic dialogue that addresses historical connections and translates them into a contemporary form. Here, art appears as an independent language of communication, making memory, encounter, and human closeness visible.

As part of the exhibition, a film about the relay run from Dachau to Auschwitz will also be shown. The run marked a sign of remembrance and reconciliation, connecting the two places in a special way. Thus, the museum expands the viewing of the works by incorporating a perspective on cultural education and historical responsibility.

Conclusion: An Exhibition That Facilitates Encounter

Visitors can expect a concentrated exhibition featuring expressive bronze sculptures, painterly counterpositions, and a multi-layered cultural-historical context. Painting & Sculpture in Dialogue invites you to consciously perceive forms and materials, reflect on memory and communication, and experience the unifying power of contemporary art live. A visit to the Altomünster Museum enriches the aesthetic experience and opens new views on the dialogue between art, history, and society.
